Our Founding

After the Grand Lodge of Maryland was moved from Baltimore to its current home at Bonnie Blink in Hunt Valley, Ancient Free and Accepted Masonry all but disappeared from the city.  Realizing the need for a Lodge in Baltimore, the Grand Master at the time, Steven J. Ponzillo III, together with members of his Grand Line, chartered the Ancient Baltimore Lodge #234. Ancient Baltimore was originally founded as a dinner lodge, meeting four times a year so that its members could gather in brotherhood for a good meal.

Ancient Baltimore was always meant to be a working lodge, meaning that it accepts new masons and guides them through the degrees to make Master Masons.  It wasn't long before the first candidates were accepted into the lodge and the first Ancient Baltimore Master Masons were made.

Why Ancient Baltimore?

Several characteristics set Ancient Baltimore apart from other Maryland AF&AM lodges

  • Our Lodge is more formal than most. Dress code for our lodge meetings are tuxedos for members, tail-coats for officers.

  • Our Lodge is small by design. With about 30 members, we are much smaller than most lodges.  Everyone knows everyone else by name.  This is not always the case in Masonic Lodges. Many Lodges have membership in the hundreds, making it possible to only personally know a handful of other members.

  • Our Lodge is a dinner lodge.  We hold four formal dinners, a Lodge holiday party, and an installation event each year. The cost of these events for members is include[d] in our annual dues. (Guests covering their own costs are often invited as well!).

  • We have a wealth of Masonic experience in our Lodge. Many of our members are also current and past members of the Grand Line of the Grand Lodge of Maryland. Moreover, our members are active as both members and leaders within the Scottish Rite, York Rite, and Shrine.

Our Location

Ancient Baltimore's primary meeting place is the historic Good Shephard United Methodist Church located at 3800 &   Roland Ave, Baltimore, MD 21218. (under dispensation)

Our membership resembles the community in which we live and work.  Ancient Baltimore celebrates it's diversity of race, religion, sexual orientation, and age.  All men are welcome to apply, provided they meet the basic requirements of Freemasonry- strong moral character and a belief in a higher power.
